Value Transformation of Media Text in Coverage of Veterans' Policy

L. Ponomarenko, A. Madei

Abstract

The aim of the article is to identify and characterize the main vectors of the value transformation of media texts in the coverage of veteran policy, as well as to determine the specifics of changing models of veterans’ representation in the contemporary Ukrainian media space.

Research methodology. The study applies a constructivist approach to the analysis of media texts as an instrument of the social construction of reality; discourse analysis to identify the peculiarities of linguistic practices and normative models of veterans’ representation; frame analysis to determine dominant models of interpreting veteran-related issues; content analysis of media materials to reveal the specifics of covering veteran policy; and case analysis to examine particular practices of solutions journalism, ethical representation, and the activities of niche veteran media.

Results. The transformation of media texts in the coverage of veteran policy is manifested in the transition from an emotional and situational model to a systemic, analytical, and ethically balanced discourse. The study identifies five main vectors of this transformation: overcoming the “hero/victim” dichotomy and establishing a model of subjectivity; the pragmatization of discourse and the development of solutions journalism; ethical recalibration and the formation of new media sensitivity; the transformation of the communication structure of the media space through the development of niche veteran media; and the institutionalization of veteran-related issues through their cross-sectoral integration into different segments of media discourse.

Scientific novelty. The article identifies the main vectors of the value transformation of media texts in the coverage of veteran policy and substantiates the media text as a space for the formation of new models of veterans’ representation in the context of the social construction of reality.

Practical significance. The findings of the study may be used in the development of professional media guidelines for covering veteran-related issues, improving journalistic standards for reporting on sensitive topics, and supporting the processes of veterans’ social integration.

Key words: media text, veteran policy, media discourse, social construction of reality, veterans’ representation, solutions journalism, niche media.
